how to tell what generation glock pistol is

Running my Glock 21 difficult at one of Henk Iverson's classes. A rear frame rails broke off presently after the form. The whole gun was replaced past Glock. It only had 32,000 rounds through it.

OK, permit me become this out of the way right off the bat.  I carry a Glock pistol during near 95% of my waking hours.  My police duty gun was either a Glock 21 or a Glock 17.  A  Glock 26 or a Glock 19 in 9mm are constant companions in my off-duty hours.  I like Glock pistols.  But are they perfect?  Not a chance.

I've broken almost every Glock I've ever owned.  No manufacturer is allowed from this reality: If you shoot the gun enough, it will pause.  A gun is a mechanical device and it can fail at whatever fourth dimension.  I liken it to a motorcar.  Even if you purchase the all-time car in the world, eventually it will intermission downwardly.

I've been a factory-certified Glock armorer since 1997.  In my job as grooming officer at the police force department, I inspected and maintained more than 75 Glock pistols carried by my officers.  I too taught at 1 of the largest shooting schools in the land, seeing hundreds more than Glock pistols in my students' hands each twelvemonth.  I've seen Glock pistols interruption in every conceivable manner.  Don't tell me "Mine has never cleaved!"  That's because y'all don't shoot it enough.  Put 10,000 rounds or more a twelvemonth through a single pistol and see what happens.

Yeah, they will intermission.  Just one of the reasons why I similar the Glock and so much is that they are like shooting fish in a barrel to set.  Many of the mutual parts breakages tin can actually exist prevented with some routine maintenance.  In this commodity, I'chiliad going to explain what parts I see pause nearly oftentimes, and what you can do to either forestall or set the breakages and get your gun upwardly and running once again.

#ane Almost mutual parts breakage- Trigger Bound

Glock Trigger springs. The coil ones on top break fairly regularly.

If y'all look at the picture, you'll run across the coil springs on the top row.  One of those springs is in your trigger machinery.  It is what returns the trigger to the forrard position afterwards the shot.  They intermission all of the fourth dimension (right at the bend on meridian or bottom), merely not in a predictable fashion.  I've had some guns become more than 50,000 rounds on the original jump.  I've also seen a jump interruption within the starting time 1000 rounds.  They are unpredictable.

When they intermission, the gun usually still functions, especially if you agree the trigger to the rear and "catch the link" later on your shot breaks.  If y'all don't practice that, you can withal manually movement the trigger forward later each shot.  It's not a fight stopper, simply it is a pain in the donkey.

If y'all never want to deal with leap breakage,  apply ane of the NY trigger springs (lower level on the picture).  They shrink rather than stretch and I've never seen one break.  Unfortunately, they will raise your trigger pull weight to 8 or 12 lbs from the factory 5.5 lbs.  I don't use them for that reason.

If you want to keep a traditional coil bound in the gun, I'd supervene upon it every 10,000 rounds or so.  When y'all practice, make sure it goes in the gun looking like an "South" shape (like the photo shows) and not backwards.  If you install it backwards, the gun will piece of work, but the spring is more likely to break.

#two Most common parts breakage- Locking Cake Pin

The locking block pin is the peak ane of the two pins above your trigger.  Information technology breaks fairly regularly, especially in the .twoscore and .357 Sig  guns.  You'll know information technology's cleaved because your gun's slide will randomly lock to the rear when you all the same have rounds left in the magazine.

An armorer is using a punch to remove the locking block pin

The best way to stop it from breaking is to supplant your recoil springs every 3000-5000 rounds.  Not many Glock owners do this, but I've found it to be critical in avoiding parts breakage.  When the recoil leap weakens, the slide moves faster and puts more stress on many of the parts on the gun (frame rails, locking cake, pins).  The constant high-speed battering is a sure recipe for a locking block pin breakage.  Supercede your recoil bound!

If your locking cake pivot does break, don't just shove a new one into the hole.  The slide stop lever (slide release) tensions on the locking cake pin.  If you drive the pin through the hole with the slide stop lever even so in identify, you could damage the spring on the top of the lever.  Remove the trigger pin and slide stop lever.  Reinstall the locking block pin.  Tension the slide terminate lever underneath the locking cake pin and so bulldoze in your trigger pivot.

#3 Near common parts breakage- Slide Stop Lever

This ane isn't unremarkably a breakage.  Nothing actually breaks.  The leap just gets all aptitude upwards and the piece stops working correctly.  Come across the wire spring on the left of the slide stop lever (besides chosen the slide release)?  That'south what I was talking nearly above when I said it tensions under (not effectually) the locking block pin.

Those springs get thrashed from poor reassembly techniques and occasionally simply curve through normal usage.  You'll notice something is wrong because the slide will lock open randomly when firing or it won't lock open up subsequently the concluding round is fired.  If this happens, but supercede the slide stop lever.  It's effectually $5.  I've never had whatever luck bending the spring dorsum into the right position.

#4 Most common parts breakage- Slide Lock Spring

The slide lock spring is the L-shaped spring that gives tension to the slide lock, that slice that you lot push down in guild to strip your gun.

slide lock leap

When these break, it's a fight stopping malfunction.  The slide will just fall off of the frame after you burn down a shot.  In essence, the gun comes apart during firing just like when you take information technology apart for cleaning.  I've had some bad luck with this 1.

I in one case carried a .45acp Glock thirty.  I loved the gun, but the slide lock spring broke SEVEN TIMES!  I had to get rid of information technology.  It but wasn't reliable enough to carry.  I've seen other Glock 30s with broken slide lock springs likewise.

The other guns I come across with cleaved slide lock springs are the older (Generation i and 2) model 23 and 19 guns.  There are 2 different slide lock springs for the Glock 23 (and 19). The newer 1 is thicker and less likely to break.  The older one is narrow and breaks subsequently near 8,000 rounds in my experience.  If y'all have the narrow i, you should probably upgrade to the new ane. The spring costs well-nigh $2 and can exist replaced in less than v minutes.

No thing which Glock yous deport, you can cause wear to the slide lock spring by improperly installing your recoil leap assembly.  When you are setting the recoil spring downwardly into the grooves in the butt, make sure y'all place it in the DEEPEST GROOVE.   Non the one closer to the surface.  If you place information technology in the peak groove, the border of the recoil spring assembly will rub on the slide lock spring every time the slide reciprocates.  That will eventually cause it to intermission.

I've seen lots of other parts pause, but the ones I listed higher up are past far the most common.  Most of them won't really even take you out of the fight if you recognize what's going on.

Prevention is really  pretty simple…

If you own a Glock, regularly supervene upon the recoil bound assembly (every 3000-5000 rounds), check your pins, and take a look at the springs when you accept the gun apart for cleaning.  That'south not likewise hard.  If you are concerned about parts breaking during a gunfight, bear a 2nd gun.  It's the all-time insurance yous can buy.

Parts replacement is pretty easy.  The best Glock gunsmithing reference I've found is The Complete Glock Reference Guide.  If you lot aren't mechanically inclined, this book provides excellent disassembly and repair instructions.

Are Glocks perfect?  Nope.  But virtually other guns are even less so.  I'll keep carrying my Glock "perfection" until another gun maker creates something improve.  I'm not holding my breath.

Yes, that's an airsoft Glock. I had to use it to demo a building search technique when its large brother (holstered) stopped working.
